Despite onions with Tag 1 (high quality) sales and seconds-grade onions sales, we still have some that do not meet our quality sales standards and become our “reject onions”, these are called waste onions. Rather than discarding these reject onions, we redirect them to Deer or Sheep Farms, which are used as nutrient-rich food for their livestock. Using reject onions as feed helps reduce food waste while also contributing to a more sustainable farming cycle.
Giving these reject onions a second life prevents unnecessary waste and meaningfully supports the farm-to-fork movement. Our commitment to sustainability ensures that every onion, regardless of shape or size, contributes to a larger purpose in the agricultural ecosystem.
Reject Onions as a Valuable Resource & Sustainable Chain
At Summit Produce, we believe in sustainability, waste reduction, and supporting local agriculture. We’re proud to provide our reject onions to deer farmers, a farm dedicated to responsible and eco-friendly practices.
While our onions meet high-quality standards for consumers, some batches don’t meet the aesthetic requirements or are misshapen for sale. Although still good quality, these onions may have minor imperfections, such as slight blemishes or irregular sizes.
We offer these as second-grade onions, providing an affordable option without compromising freshness and taste. They are perfect for cooking, juicing, or any other use where appearance is secondary to flavour and quality. By offering second-grade onions, we aim to minimise waste and ensure that even those that don’t meet the highest visual standards still contribute to delicious meals and food production.
At Summit Produce, we’re excited to be part of a solution that reduces waste, supports local farms, and contributes to healthier food systems. By doing so, we’re creating a more sustainable future for our food and farming communities.
