Our 1.5kg bag is a smaller bag containing small to medium sized onions (approx 50-68mm size). This bag is a good size for customers who cook for smaller or single-person households, or those who do not have a lot of storage space. The 1.5kg bag is available with either nylon netting or compostable netting and available with Summit branding or Pams branding (for Foodstuffs sales only).
Our 2kg bag is a smaller quantity of small to medium sized onions, approx. 50-68mm size and includes slightly more onions than the 1.5kg bag. 2 kg bags are available in nylon or compostable netting and available with Summit branding or Pams value (for Foodstuffs sales only).
What are they used for
Brown onions are widely used in cooking across many cultures. From soups and stews, pies and pickles, to curries and stir fries, they add depth of flavor not available from any other vegetable. Brown onions are the best onion to use for caramelizing and cooking. Although they are sharp and pungent when raw, they become mellow and flavorsome when gently sautéed.
Mirepoix: Mirepoix is equal amounts of diced onion, carrot, and celery. This mixture is gently cooked with butter, or another form of fat, for extended periods without causing the Maillard reaction (browning), causing them to sweeten instead of caramelize. This is used in many soups, stews, and sauces.
